SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

1. Will I register for/enroll in the English Preparatory class?

You do not need to register/enrol the preparatory class. Follow the announcements from YTU foreign languages website. If you pass the preparatory class, you should go to your department and register for your courses.

 

2. I’ve registered as a foreign student to the university. When can I begin my study in the preparatory class?

Foreign students who register to the university continue TÖMER during their first academic year. At the beginning of the next academic year, the Foreigners Office sends a list of successful students to the School of Foreign Languages. The required procedure is carried out by the Foreign Languages School Secretary so that the students whose names are in the list can take the exam in September.

 

3. Where can I learn my course schedule and classes?

Course schedules and classes are announced on the website of the School of Foreign Languages just before the start of the new academic year.

 

4. Where can I get preparatory class course books and supplementary materials?

At the beginning of each semester, the desks are set where publishing houses sell the books in our School of Foreign Language building. You get your course books from here or from the publishing houses. You can get the materials/photocopies which are asked to be bought by the English preparation unit or by the instructors from the photocopy section of the building in the basement of the school.

 

5. Do I have compulsory school attendance in fall, spring and summer semesters?

There is 85% attendance requirement for each semester during the English preparatory teaching program. The remaining absenteeism period from the first semester cannot be transferred to the second semester. The acceptance of long-term absences due to health problems documented by the committee health report and the necessity of participating in sports and cultural activities of our university is subject to the decision of the Board of Directors.

 

6. How can I learn my absenteeism?

You can learn your absenteeism every 4 weeks from the School of Foreign Languages website.

 

7. My absenteeism has been announced, but there is a mistake in my absenteeism, what should I do?

You can consult to the School of Foreign Languages, Department of Basic English Student Affairs.

 

8. Can I take the English proficiency exam (İYS) if I exceed the absenteeism limit?

The students who do not regularly attend the courses and meet the 85% attendance requirement cannot take the proficiency exam (İYS) which is carried out at the end of semester. Those students have the right to take the Proficiency exam (İYS) which will be held in the following academic year.

 

9. Are the days with reports deducted from absenteeism?

The acceptance of the committee reports is subject to the decision of the Board of Directors of the School of Foreign Languages.

 

10. I failed in the fall semester due to absenteeism. Can I continue my classes in spring semester?

Students announced to have failed cannot continue their classes as of the date of announcement and cannot sit the proficiency exam (İYS) which will be held at the end of the semester. You have the right to participate in the proficiency exam, which will be held in September. In addition, you can be exempt from the preparation program when you sit exams such as YDS and TOEFL, whose equivalency is accepted by our university, and take the required score.

Students are given the right to attend classes for only one academic year; students who cannot start their departments within this year become suspended / remedial student for the next year and they cannot attend the classes, but they can only sit the proficiency exam.

 

 

11. In the first year of preparatory education, I was unsuccessful or I failed due to absenteeism. What other rights do I have?

 

Students who are unsuccessful or fail due to absenteeism do not have the right to repeat preparatory education in the second year. However, after the first year, they can take proficiency exam (except Summer School) limited to 4 (four) times.

 

 

12. What are the requirements for me to pass the preparatory class at the end of the fall semester?

Only B level students with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 60 within the semester are allowed to sit the proficiency exam. These students must also meet the attendance requirement. The score from the proficiency exam has to be at least 60 in order to pass successfully from the proficiency exam at the end of the semester.

 

13. What are the requirements for me to pass the preparatory class at the end of spring semester?

Students are allowed to take the exam only if fall and spring Semesters average grade point is at least 60, and attendance requirement is met. Proficiency exam passing grade is 60.

 

14. Is it compulsory for newly-registered students to take the proficiency exam in September?

You will be exempt from the exam in September according to your exam score or you will directly start your preparation education. If you stay in preparatory education program, you will be placed in a level according to your exam score, which means you have to take the above-mentioned exam since you will not be given any extra exam to determine your level.

 

15. I am a suspended student. Do I have to register to take the proficiency exam?

You do not need to register to take the proficiency exam since we have the lists of suspended students available in our system. Information about exam time and places is announced on YTU Foreign Languages website, you can follow the information about the exam you will take. The content of the exam and the sample exam are also available on the website.

 

16. I cannot find my name on the proficiency exam announcement list, what should I do?

If you do not have your name on the lists announced before the exam, please report your status to the School of Foreign Languages, Department of Basic English, Student Affairs.

 

17.  What are the documents needed to be with us on the day of the exam?

The documents required for the English proficiency exam can be accessed from Yıldız Technical University website as well as from Yıldız Technical University School of Foreign Languages website.

 

18. What is the grade that I have to take from the proficiency exam in order to be exempt from preparatory class and advanced English courses?

The required grade for exemption from the English preparatory period is 60 (C+).

The exemption for Advanced English I and advanced English II courses is 70.

 

19. Is there a makeup exam for the English proficiency exam?

A makeup exam is not given to the students who cannot take the proficiency exam for any reason. This applies to the all end-of-semester proficiency exams. In addition, newly-registered students who cannot take the proficiency exam at the beginning of the fall semester begin preparatory school at the lowest level and these students do not have the right to sit the proficiency exam held in the middle of the semester.

 

20. Where can I get sample English proficiency exams?

21. Can I object to my grade? How should I make my objection?

You can make your objections about the exam result with a petition letter that you have written personally to the department within the legal period (three working days) and the objections made via e-mail are not taken into consideration.

 

22. Why doesn't my English proficiency test score show up in USIS?

The grades of the students who take 60 and above from the proficiency exam and pass to their departments are processed to the USIS so that students can chose their courses. The grades of the students who are going to attend preparatory education program or the students who are in a waiting position are not processed in the system.

 

23. I was successful in the fall semester proficiency exam and passed my class. Can I continue attending the 2nd semester preparatory classes?

If you are successful in the proficiency exam, you cannot attend the preparatory classes anymore.

 

24. I want to get a transcript. What should I do?

25. Can I get a document confirming that I’ve passed the preparatory classes?

You must apply to the Basic English Department Student Affairs with a petition letter to get a document confirming that you have successfully completed your preparatory education. Contact student affairs for detailed information. (0212 383 49 20 - 132)

 

26. Can I get a document confirming that I don't get disciplinary penalty?

You can get a document stating that you have not received a disciplinary penalty, but you must apply to the Department of Basic English Student Affairs with a petition letter. Contact student affairs for detailed information. (0212 383 49 20 - 132)

 

27. Can I get document showing that I’ve failed in the English Proficiency Exam?

You may receive a document stating that you have failed in the English Proficiency Exam, but you must apply to the Basic English Department Student Affairs with a petition letter. Contact student affairs for detailed information. (0212 383 49 20 - 132)

 

28. Are there any exams equivalents to the proficiency exams? If any, what minimum score do I need to get from these exams in order to be exempt from the preparation program or to pass the preparatory class?

Some examinations accepted as equivalent to the Proficiency Exam and minimum scores required to be taken from these examinations are as follows:

29. Is it valid to score 60 and above from the proficiency exam of another university in order to be exempt from the preparation program of Yıldız Technical University?

30. My department is 100% Turkish, can I get preparatory education?

Yıldız Technical University School of Foreign Languages Basic English Department accepts only the students to the system whose departments are 30% and 100% English.  Students whose departments are 100% Turkish do not receive preparatory education even if they want.
